`PRIVATE ISPS WILL BENEFIT VSNL'
Article Abstract:
The Government of India's decision to give licence to private Intenet Service Providers (ISPs) will benefit Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) by reducing costs. With new ISPs having requirements of 10 to 20 MB, VSNL can be a connecting engine. Private ISPs would find the cost and time prohibitive to set up their own earth stations. VSNL is also planning to induct new technology for on-line billing and registration. The percentage of revenue from Net accounts, currently at 1 percent, could increase to 7 percent. VSNL plans to invite bids for distribution of the Global Mobile Personal Communications (GMPC) systems of ICO Global Communication shortly. VSNL has 7 percent stake in ICO with a paid up capital of around Rs70 crore for the proposed joint venture. VSNL has no investment but has secured distribution rights for the service. (nr)
